How to Dock a Boat: Step-by-Step Guide for New Boaters

Are you considering becoming a first-time boat owner, or have you just purchased your first boat and are looking for tips? Are you excited about getting out on the water but nervous about docking? Docking a boat doesn’t have to be stressful. It becomes like riding a bike once you get the hang of it. Perfect for beginners, this article breaks down a step-by-step guide on what to do each step of the way so you can dock a boat like a pro on your next trip to the lake.

How To Dock A Boat: Preparation

Before getting close to the dock, ensure you are prepared with fenders and dock lines. Also, pull all board racks in towards the interior of the boat. Our video (see below) shows us about 200 feet from the dock. Before getting any closer, attach your fender to the cleat. Ensure your fender is secured, and then attach your docking lines to the same cleat. We highly recommend teaching a family member this step, saving you time and hassle during those busy seasons.

How To Dock A Boat: Approaching

Now, as you pull in and plan your approach, make sure to have your angle figured out. Pay attention to the wind and current to assist you in controlling the boat as you slowly come in. Important to know: Skier’s Mairne carries three brands that all reverse to the right (MasterCraft, Moomba, Supra). What does this mean for you? It means that you will have a much easier time docking a boat on the right side rather than the left. When trying to dock a boat, a key piece is that you never want to have the boat in gear constantly. It makes a huge difference to bump the boat in and out of gear to push yourself forward enough to glide closer to the dock. You’re done once you have your dock lines tied to the dock cleats!
