Rett grew up with a passion for watersports and loved spending time at the lake. As a police officer, he found it challenging to afford a modest inboard boat. To fulfill his dream of owning a family boat, Rett started working as a part-time boat sales representative. This role not only allowed him to share his love for watersports with his family but also enabled him to help many others create their own boating experiences. In 1994, he furthered his journey to becoming a boat dealer when Malibu Boats offered him the Central Alabama territory.
In 1995, Skier’s Marine was established and operated out of Rett’s basement. During the early years of its operation, Rett, who was still a full-time police officer, sold boats in his spare time. In its first year, Skier’s Marine sold six Malibu boats.
By 2011, Rett’s sons had joined the family business and opened a dealership in Athens, AL. Since then, Skier’s Marine has experienced nearly 900% growth. As of Fall 2025, Skier’spany has commenced construction on a new dealership located on Highway 565 in Huntsville, AL. Over its 30-plus years in business, Skier’s Marine has established itself as the premier authority on watersports in the Southeast, continuing to significantly impact the watersports community while expanding in the pontoon segment.

Founded in 1995, Skier’s Marine began its exciting journey from Rett’s basement! Juggling his full-time job as a police officer, Rett passionately sold boats in his spare time. That first year, he proudly sold six Malibu boats on the side of Hwy 280.
In 1997, we were ecstatic to open our first location on Highway 119 in Birmingham, AL! This exciting step let us create a cozy pro shop, accommodate 25 boats, and kickstart a part-time service center, laying the foundation for what Skier's Marine is today.
In 1999, Rett was able to purchase 3 acres on Highway 280, where our Westover location continues to operate today. This new site provided Skier's Marine with space for a full-time service team, a large pro shop, and room for future growth. Many factors contributed to making this location a possibility in 1999, and we believe that God's hand was involved in all of them.
In 2011, after graduating from Auburn University with a degree in Building Science, Rett's oldest son, Chad, joined the family business by relocating to Athens, AL, where he opened Skier's Marine's second location. Supported and motivated by Skier's Choice, which includes Supra and Moomba boats, Skier's Marine expanded its presence with this new location.
In 2018, Skier's Marine experienced significant growth by opening two new locations: one in Chattanooga, TN, and the other in Gainesville, GA. The expansion into Georgia was our largest to date, entering one of the nation's biggest boat markets.
As of Fall 2022, Skier’s Marine opened its eighth boat dealership in the Southeast and its second in Georgia. This new boutique location contributed to MasterCraft becoming the top-selling wake boat brand in Georgia by Fall 2025. Skier's Marine is recognized as the number one MasterCraft dealership in the world.
